Hello everyone, I thought I would pop in and update this blog once more with more of my random blurbs. This I bring you one of my favorite singers in the world, Zhang li yin, she a chinese pop singer with the voice of an angel, she active in both China and South Korea (well more active in China for the most part, give her something in Korea already! Geez!).

One of my most beloved songs by her is I Will, a cover of a song by S.E.S. I’m sorry if anyone is an S.E.S fan but I prefer li yin’s version over their’s, sorry that’s just my opinion. Now anyway, everytime I listen to this song she just draws me with her voice because it’s just so full of emotion! And when she gets to the bridge of the song, I get goosebumps everytime and when that happens I know that the singer has some real talent. She’s not the only one to get that reaction from me, but I think she’s one of the few that keep getting that reaction each time I listen to a song of hers. And even though the lyrics aren’t hers originally, she does well to convey the emotion and message of I Will flawlessly. It also helps that since she’s gotten SO much better at being more confident during her live appearances that the live rendition of this song is as beautiful as the recording of it <3. Well I just wanted to brag about her for a little bit so here is the pinyin and translation of the lyrics that I got from Chocolyn Forums, and I’m putting the song up here so you can hear it =3. I decided to dedicate a small post to Miyazaki’s latest movie, Ponyo, a film that was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story, The Little Mermaid. Miyazaki’s film is centered around a gold fish named Ponyo, who befriends a human boy named Sosuke, and wants to become a human in order to be with him.

I have always been a huge fan of Miyazaki’s films, my first being Kiki’s delivery service at a VERY young age without realizing it. Now the one that I remember seeing for the first time, Princess Mononoke, through a humorous accident on the part of my mother (she figured since it said princess it would be appropriate for an almost 10 yr old and her younger brothers; I’m sure she read ratings after making that mistake lol). Anyway, instead of being horrified by seeing that much violence at young age, I was amazed by the movie because at that time I had never seen anything like it. I am serious when I say that my brother and I watched Princess Mononoke about 10-14 times a day before it had to be returned to the movie rental store.

With Ponyo, it was the first time that I had been extremely unsure about a Miyazaki movie in my life since I loved his last one, Howl’s Moving Castle. It could have been because of the promotional images which didn’t make me excited about seeing it, or maybe it was just the title that threw me off; well what ever the reason, I was afraid that I may not like it when I went to see with a good friend the second day it was in theaters. I’m happy to say that I was wrong and that I loved it, it was very heart warming and magical, plus the characters were all very memorable, especially Ponyo, whose random outbursts and awkwardness when she first turns herself into a human are very funny but your just very taken by her nonetheless.

I think what was very humorous about her was her love of ham. When she first meets Sosuke, a human five year old boy, she had just escaped in a bid for freedom from her undersea wizard father, fujimoto. Through a troublesome situation she gets herself stuck inside a glass jar in the ocean and is washed near a cliff side with a house on top where Sosuke lives. Now fastforwarding, Sosuke decides to keep her as his pet gold fish and keeps her in a bucket of water. She discovers her love of ham while on the way to Sosuke being dropped off to his school and to his mother’s work, to get to the point, she steals the ham right out of Sosuke’s sandwich.

I found it extremely funny and very cute, although I can’t say I’d ever be that excited over ham but I guess if I was a magical gold fish tasting human food for the first time I’d probably love it too. Anyway, even though she is with Sosuke for a short time before her father finds her again, she automatically falls in love with Sosuke and is determined to become a human girl so she can be with him.

That determination leads to another escape with causes her to get mixed up in fathers magical potion, giving her the form of a human girl which ultimately leads to a catastrophic storm (which is mostly caused by her thousands of sisters who were inspired to follow ponyo in her escape from their father’s undersea castle) that swallows the whole seaside town in ocean water. The part that I’m talking about is probably my favorite out of the whole movie just because of the fact it was an extremely high point in the movie and I was very afraid Sosuke’s mother’s car would end up being swallowed by the waves that were following them all the way up to their house (thanks to Ponyo running on the waves to get to Sosuke).

Another one of my favorite parts of the movie was where Sosuke’s father, who is still out at sea, sees a tall wall of water caused by the moon becoming so close to the earth that it is practically holding many ships captive and unable to move away. It kind of inspires a terror that such a monstrous wall of water may fall at any moment but fortunately, Ponyo’s mother (goddess of the ocean? I’m not sure what she symbolizes other than being Ponyo’s mother) comes and helps the ships out of the wall of water.

I think one of the things that I amazed me the most was that this whole movie was drawn by hand, which you have to admit is rare nowadays with all these completely 3d movies and 2d movies that throw in computer effects (not that I mind the later, it was useful in Howl’s Moving Castle so I couldn’t imagine that movie without them). Funny thing is, I didn’t even realize it until my friend had said something to me when had gotten out of the theatre. I guess it just makes me appreciate the movie even more, for it must have been many hours of painstakingly, but rewarding, hard work to create and put this movie together.

Even though Ponyo is obviously aimed at a younger audience, it may not be everyone’s favorite movie so I’m not going to sit here and say you all must like it or else. I do believe though that it will win the admiring of many adults as well as children, and this is coming from someone whose about to turn 21 next month. And even though it isn’t absolutely strange and crazily stunning like many of Miyazaki’s works, for me it is an automatic classic and a stunning modern telling of Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid. Anyone who is a Miyazaki fan or just a lover of animated movies should see this, you will definitely not be disappointed!

A Clean Slate

I always thought that becoming someone meant that you had to have lots of fame and money, and a lot of talent and knowledge that no one else has. I was thinking just now, so what if I don’t have all that money and fame? So what if I’m not as talented or as knowledgeable as I’d like to be?

I think that when we try to force ourselves into places where we don’t fit, we start to become unsure of ourselves and what we want in life. Like, do I really want this or do I want it because it’ll make me look better to everyone else? Trying to do something that you have no passion for makes you feel empty and lost, like life is really pointless and that you are really not worth anything.

This and many other things, have caused me to wipe clean what I had here and pour out the real contents of my heart. Put forth a clean slate as the title says, and show what my life really is like. It may not be exciting or interesting all the time, but that is what life really is. It’s like Russian roulette everyday, you never what’s going to happen or what your going to get that day.

I’ve tried to be many things in my life, most recently I tried being a princess. While that was a futile attempt, it was because it’s just not who I am. I’m just an average college student trying to get my foot through the door so she make something of her self one day. As well I am a friend, whom everyone seems to feel that they can confide in. I am also a daughter and sister, niece, I am just a normal person to sum it up. I have never had the air of a princess and I never will have that. I know it sounds like I’m making it out to be a bad thing but I’m not. I’m just coming to terms with the fact that some people can do or be this, and then there are people who can’t.

What I know I am though, is poet, a writer, an artist. It took me many years to get rid of this rebellious zeal for going against what people expected of me, and that one expectation was me majoring in art. I’ve only realized months ago, thanks to a disastrous venture into trying to get into the engineering school, that art was what I’m the best at and it always has been, why keep fighting it? This just goes back to people trying to fit themselves into places just to impress people. In my case, the person I was trying to impress was my father, who is an electrical engineer himself. Through this, I as well learned that just because someone doesn’t show it, it doesn’t mean that they don’t believe or are proud of you. That is something that I’ll talk about some other time though.

I should probably go to bed now, but my mind is more awake than it has been in months…so many months of sleepless nights and unbearable days. I want to change all that now though, and that’s why I’m as well trying to start over in life as well. I can’t fully get rid of all the things that have been in let down lately but I’m going to find better ways to handle them then just letting it all control my life and stray me from my line of concentration. If anyone happens to stumble upon this humble blog, I hope that anything I write here might help people in some way and that some of the things I may write about won’t be taken the wrong way…not that there will be many subjects that I speak of that will rub people the wrong way. Well I’ll be ending this here, I hope I can actually keep this blog up unlike my many other ones.
